Halloween Mummy from Steve's Sketchbook
A Mummy and a Joke
What kind of music does a mummy like? Wrap! I will let you think about that for a minute if you did not get it the first time. This is the latest entry in Steve’s Sketchbook, by the way.
Halloween is just around the corner. And to me, one of the best things about Halloween is how there are always so many good Halloween joke opportunities. The one above is just one of my many favorites. Here are some more.
Why did the vampire go to the pharmacist? To get something for his coffin.
Why did the Headless Horseman go to college? He wanted to get a head.
What did the werewolf get on his IQ test? Drool.
Why didn’t the skeleton cross the road? He didn’t have the guts.
What is the vampire’s least favorite song? Sunshine On My Shoulders.
That should give you just a little taste of the things that go on in my head sometimes. And if that isn’t scary, I don’t know what is.
Halloween Fun
Except for some bad jokes and candy, I am really not that much of a Halloween kind of guy. I don’t care for scary movies, and haunted houses aren’t my thing, either. I guess I prefer happier, fun things instead.
One time when I was a teenager, our church youth group had a haunted house. I probably would not have gone to it, except for the fact that I was asked to be a guide through the haunted house. I got to dress up and wear a mask, and I would lead groups through the haunted house. It was a little more fun being on the inside of it all. Still not necessarily my thing, but it was a fun night.
However, I know some people love that sort of thing. Haunted houses usually do big business around this time of year, and Universal Studios Orlando draws in big crowds with all of their Halloween stuff. It is all in good fun, of course. And that’s fine, if that counts as fun for you. Everyone is different, after all.
But around Halloween, I will most likely be home eating candy and watching happy movies, if you don’t mind.
Bible Verse
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. - 1 John 1:5
About the Artwork
This artwork actually started out as two different ideas. I thought about drawing a mummy for whatever reason. And I also thought about sharing some of my favorite Halloween jokes. But then I came up with the idea to combine the two, having the mummy joke go along with the mummy drawing. So that is what I did. It is a little late to do any more now, but maybe next year I will do another one as a follow-up.
I drew the mummy in Procreate for iPad, as I have been doing lately. I have seen other artwork of mummies having eyes peering out from their wraps, but I decided not to go in that direction. A completely wrapped guy was fine for me.
I also put a little more thought into the color palate for this one. The outlines are actually a shade of purple instead of black, and that goes along with the purple shades of the background.
You might have noticed that I like textures instead of flat surfaces, so there are textures on the ground and background. That makes it a little more interesting than a flat surface for me.
And I need to work on my lettering a little more. I wanted a hand-lettered look instead of just typing the words, but typing might have been a little neater. I will work on that for next time!
Here is a look at some of the various stages of this drawing:
