Evening Clouds Over the Waves

Evening clouds over the waves in a digital painting

Evening clouds hover over the waves rolling onto the shore in this beach scene in the latest Art by Burnsland.

Imagine yourself standing on a cliff high above the waves down below, with a beautiful sunset sky above it all. The sunset colors of the clouds reflect in the water below. That was the mood I was trying to capture in this painting.

This painting is a follow-up of sorts to another recent art piece. In some ways, this is the evening follow-up to the daytime view of that earlier piece. These are two different settings, but similar in nature. And yes, this one was also based on a scene we saw on our 2018 Kauaʻi Trip in Hawaiʻi.

In the actual view, there were hotels and other buildings off in the distance. But I decided to have this be a more idealized view. It is good to have things like hotels, because you need a place to stay when you visit somewhere like this. But in this case (for the sake of art), it was also fine not to include them.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is an eternal God, the Creator of the whole earth. He does not get tired or weary; there is no limit to his wisdom. He gives strength to those who are tired; to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy. - Isaiah 40:28-29

Ideal Places

What is your ideal place to visit? Or what is your favorite vacation spot? There is a good chance that your answer is different from mine. And there is also a good chance that our answers might change from time to time.

My ideal place would be a nice, warm beach somewhere. Laura and I have our favorite beaches that we like to visit, but we also like to go to new beaches, too. Each one has its own charm and its own benefits. While we like some better than others, we have not found many that we just do not like.

In this age that we live in, it is nice to be able to travel to different places and see more of the world. Back one hundred or more years ago, travel was much more limited, due to the travel methods available at the time. Not everyone had months of time to be able to get on a ship and sail somewhere, or the time required to ride a train across the country. Now, we can get places pretty quickly, relatively.

Also, not everyone loves to travel. Some people are more than content to stay right where they are. Nothing wrong with that. Everywhere is somewhere special, if you just take the time to look around.

We live in a pretty special place, but then we enjoy other places, too. Like beaches, for example.

About the Artwork

I donʻt know how much time I spent working on the clouds in this. I never was quite satisfied. I tried several different versions, but I kept coming back to what you see here, which was my first attempt.

One of the great things about digital artwork is being able to change things up. Because I had the clouds on a separate layer, I could turn that layer off and then try another approach to clouds, and then turn on the original layer to see which I liked better. You can’t very well do that with canvas and paint.

And although you might not be able to tell at the scale that you can view this art piece here, I did give it a bit of a canvas texture, just to keep it from looking too flat.

All of this was done on an iPad using the Procreate app and an Apple Pencil.
