Burns Family Christmas Card 2023

Each year, we send out a Christmas card to family and friends. Our cards have become a tradition for us, as we enjoy creating them and sending them out, and we like them to be a bit unique. See some of our past cards here.

For our 2023 Christmas card, I asked Laura what we should do, as I always do. She is the member of our team with the best, most creative ideas, and pretty much all of our Christmas card ideas have come from her. She thought about our travels during the year, and about the changes that had come our way. She said, “2023 has been a trip! What if we were hanging on to the wing of an airplane?”

With that, I started drawing what that would look like, and we took some photos to go along with it, and here is what we came up with:

As you can see, we are hanging on to the plane, trying not to get left behind. And in the clouds are some of our adventures: our 2023 Hawaii trip, our trip to Virginia and Washington, DC, and Jaylin entering the working world. There were more adventures in 2023, but these were a good sample.

And we try to make the back of our cards just as interesting as the front, so here is a look at the other side:

As it turns out, Santa Claus and a reindeer are flying the plane that we are hanging onto. The reindeer has made an appearance on the back of our Christmas card for several years in a row, and flying the plane was an obvious way to include him, with Santa along for good measure. And we included a message (written by Laura), telling a little about our year and offering holiday greetings and hope for the new year, too.

As you might can tell, our Christmas cards are never too serious. We like to bring a bit of holiday joy to those who receive the cards. Hopefully, we succeeded this year.

Behind the Scenes

This was our first Christmas card in a few years to include a photo taken just for the card. We used to do that quite a bit, but we had gotten away from that for a couple of years, mainly due to Jaylin being away at college. This year, we decided to go back to using a photo. And of course, we still included Jaylin, up in the clouds.

Here was our first attempt at a photo:

However, this photo did not work exactly, because we were not lined up with the wing of the plane. I ended up using Laura from this photo, but I took a separate photo of just me for my part of it. Ignore the fall decorations, which were still up in November when we took these photos.

Even with taking our photos early as we did, the cards did not get sent out until mid-December. Oh well, hopefully everyone received theirs before Christmas!
